Family Groups

Our Family Groups – Belonging, Empowerment and Making a Difference

At the heart of our school is our vision of ‘Making a Difference Through Empowerment and Challenging the Norm’. Our Family Groups bring this vision to life, creating a strong sense of belonging, identity and community, where every child feels valued, connected and empowered to make a difference.

From the moment children join our school, they become part of a Family Group (our school house system), which remains their school family throughout their journey with us. Siblings are placed in the same Family Group, strengthening family connections and creating a shared sense of pride and belonging.

Our Family Groups are about much more than traditional school houses. They provide opportunities for pupils of all ages to come together, build positive relationships, celebrate achievements and help one another through peer-to-peer support. Through shared experiences, collaborative challenges and whole-school initiatives, children develop confidence, teamwork, resilience and a sense of collective responsibility.

Our Four Family Groups – Proud of Our Heritage, Inspired by Our Future

Our four Family Groups are rooted in the rich history and heritage of Milborne Port, celebrating the trades and industries that helped shape our local community. By connecting our past with our aspirations for the future, we encourage children to develop pride in where they come from while empowering them to shape what comes next.

  • Weavers – "Weaving a Brighter Tomorrow"
Working together, connecting ideas and creating opportunities to build a brighter future for everyone.

  • Merchants – "Together We Grow Further: Empowerment for All"
Championing ambition, collaboration and opportunity, recognising that we achieve more when everyone is empowered to succeed.

  • Glovers – "Lending a Hand to Make a Difference"
Leading with kindness, compassion and generosity, understanding that even the smallest actions can have a lasting impact.

  • Tanners – "Stronger Together"
Celebrating resilience, unity and determination, recognising the strength that comes from supporting and inspiring one another.

Each Family Group has its own identity and shared purpose, but all four are united by our school vision and a commitment to making a positive difference.

Leadership through our House Captains

House Captains – Leading by Example, Inspiring Others

At our school, leadership is about more than holding a title. It is about inspiring others, showing kindness, setting a positive example and helping everyone feel that they belong.

Our Year 6 House Captains play an important role in bringing our Family Groups together, championing pupil voice and representing the values and aspirations of their school family.

The election of our House Captains is a celebration of democracy, confidence and pupil empowerment. As part of the process, the whole school has the opportunity to develop an understanding of the British democratic voting system, experiencing first-hand the importance of having a voice and making an informed choice.

Our Year 6 candidates demonstrate courage and confidence as they share their ideas, communicate their vision and explain how they hope to make a difference. Pupils then have the opportunity to vote for the candidates they believe will best represent and inspire their Family Group.

This meaningful experience brings British Values to life, particularly democracy, mutual respect and individual liberty. It demonstrates that every voice matters and every pupil has the power to influence positive change.

Once elected, our House Captains are empowered to lead by example, listen to the ideas of others, encourage participation and inspire their Family Groups to work together towards shared goals.

Everyone a Leader, Everyone a Learner

In keeping with our commitment to Everyone a Leader, Everyone a Learner, our Family Groups provide opportunities for leadership at every age and stage of school life.

We believe that leadership belongs to everyone, not just those with a title. Through Family Group activities, pupil-led initiatives, community projects and opportunities to celebrate achievements, every child is encouraged to contribute their strengths, share their ideas and take responsibility for making a difference.

By bringing pupils together across year groups, we create a supportive school community where older children inspire younger pupils, friendships flourish and everyone learns from one another.

One School, Four Families, a Shared Vision

Our Family Groups celebrate our local heritage while looking confidently towards the future. They nurture belonging, encourage healthy competition, promote collaboration and empower children to challenge the norm by thinking differently and taking positive action.

Together, our Weavers, Merchants, Glovers and Tanners are more than four school houses. They are four families, united by a shared belief that everyone can lead, everyone can contribute and everyone can make a difference.

Rooted in our heritage. Empowered to lead. Inspired to make a difference.
